FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- Building facility managers face many challenges and for the last few years rising energy and utility costs have been at the top of the list. More than 40 local energy engineers recently learned how to meet the challenge from Roger Shull, Director of Business Energy Development at Damuth Trane. The group gathered in Yorktown for the monthly meeting of AEE (Association of Energy Engineers) earlier this month.
Shull’s topic, “Commissioning,” is the process to ensure a mechanical system works in accordance with the design intent. It includes testing and adjusting of the current system to ensure the building operates in accordance with requirements and construction documents.
“This is a great opportunity for energy improvements and to fix the inefficiencies in out existing facilities,” Shull commented.
Retro-commissioning is the systematic process to return buildings to the original design intent, typically after the building has aged five years. This is an ongoing process that requires periodic testing of the systems qualities.
There are many benefits for commissioning and retro-commissioning. The building and systems work properly and efficiently, reducing maintenance and operating costs. The owner will experience energy savings that can help a building “go green.” This can also aid the building in becoming an Energy Star candidate or qualify for LEED certification.
